San Leon Volunteer Fire Department Takes Swift Action After Discovery of Suspicious Substance
San Leon, 4/26/2024 – During routine station duties, a small plastic bag containing what appeared to be illegal
narcotics was discovered in the San Leon Volunteer Fire Department. Assistant Chief Vincent Garcia promptly
secured the item after being alerted to its discovery.
Following protocol, Fire Chief R.E. Davis immediately directed Chief Garcia and Board President Hector Zelante to
contact the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, requesting assistance. A deputy was dispatched, and collaboration
with the Webster Police Department ensued, specifically engaging their narcotics K-9 division.
Subsequent field tests by GCSO confirmed the presence of cocaine residue in the bag. To ensure thoroughness, the
Webster Police Department's K-9 unit conducted a comprehensive search of the station premises. Fortunately, the
search yielded no further indications of illicit substances.
Although this incident is indeed concerning, it's important to note that there is currently no evidence implicating any
San Leon firefighters. Following a meticulous search conducted by both the Galveston County Sheriff's Office
(GCSO) and the Webster Police, encompassing all personal fire gear and personnel areas, no evidence was found
linking our team members to the discovery.
We are actively exploring all potential scenarios, including the fact that the station has been accessible to the public
and non-fire personnel throughout the week. Despite the unsettling nature of this discovery, it's crucial to emphasize
that the incident poses no immediate threat to the safety of our community or the continuity of our fire operations.
Nonetheless, the San Leon Volunteer Fire Department is committed to upholding the highest standards of
professionalism and safety. We categorically denounce the presence and use of illegal drugs within our station or
among our members. Immediate measures will be taken to ensure that our membership aligns with the expectations
of our community and maintains the utmost integrity.
The San Leon Volunteer Fire Department reaffirms its unwavering dedication to the welfare of our community and
members. We remain steadfast in our commitment to uphold the law, uphold community standards, and uphold the
highest ethical principles. Our dedication to transparency and honesty with our community remains steadfast, and it's
imperative for us to keep you informed.
