Address Numbers Placement Recommendations
Even if you receive your mail at a PO Box it’s still important to post your assigned address.
Follows these tips in order to make sure emergency responders can find you. Every second counts.
Size Recommendation
Residential
All residential single-family homes should have numbers that are at least 4 inches high. Multifamily building such as apartments and condominiums should have numbers that are at least 6 inches high.
Nonresidential
Office commercial retail industrial and other nonresidential buildings should have numbers that are at least 6 inches high.
You can help emergency responders locate your house or building by properly displaying your address and following the simple recommendations
Color
The color of your address Numbers should contrast with the background. It is also helpful if the numbers are reflective.
Placement
Address Numbers should be placed within 3 feet of the front entrance of the house or in a location that can be seen from the street in both directions. The numbers on the mailbox alone do not meet the posting recommendations.
Maintenance
If address Numbers are placed where the grass vines and other plants can grow an effective visibility, the owner must properly maintain the growth so the numbers are always visible.
If the address numbers become damaged for any reason is the owner’s responsibility to fix them. Make sure the numbers are repaired and serve their purpose.
Driveways
All driveways should provide a clear passable access from the street at the location from where the structure is addressed.
Secondary Signs
If the addressed structure is more than 75 feet from the road additional posting is recommended sign should be at the intersection of the legal driveway and the roadway that the structure is addressed from as well as on or near the structure itself.

- Addresses should be posted during the construction of new structures and properly maintained thereafter.
- Address numbers and letters must be at least 4 inches high on a single-family residential structure and at least a 6 inches high on apartments condominiums in commercial structure
- Nonresidential structure address Numbers should be at least 6 inches in height. If the building is more than 75 feet from the road is recommended to have additional postings.
- For residential structures address numbers should be placed within a 3 foot perimeter of the front entrance in a location visible from the street. For nonresidential and multifamily structures they should be placed in approximately center of the structure or where it can be mostly easily read from the street.
- In the event a resident is more than 75 feet from the road the additional address numbers should be placed at the intersection of the legally recognized drive way and the road that resident is addressed from.
- Address numbers and letters should be in a color contrasting with the color of the house and any framing the address numbers are permanently set on.
- The owner of the structure is responsible for maintaining the proper display of the address numbers and letters and for making sure the address is visible from the street.
- Official numbers and letters should be in a common easy-to-read font.
- Posting numbers on the mailbox will not fulfill these recommendations however numbers on the post supporting the mailbox is a acceptable option.
